Als looking at Holmes

The Alouettes could be on the verge of signing one of the Canadian Football League’s most complete offensive players - if they can find him.

Montreal has made a contract offer to Corey Holmes, a free agent who can play running back and receiver, and excels on special teams, The Gazette has learned.

The only problem, according to sources, is that Holmes appears to have disappeared and can’t be reached for comment. He hasn’t returned phone messages left by his agent, Gil Scott, nor Scott’s associate. Even Jim Popp, the Als’ general manager, has been unsuccessful. Holmes also hasn’t returned messages left by The Gazette.

“It’s bizarre,” one source said. “There must be something going on. Maybe he has changed his mind about playing football.”

Either Holmes is away on vacation or simply can’t be bothered to talk to anyone.

“If (foul play) was the case, we would have heard something through the newspapers,” another source said. “But I don’t know what’s going on in his world.”

Holmes, 31, is a seven-year CFL veteran who was released in January by the Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders in an obvious cost-cutting move. Holmes told the Regina Leader-Post at the time he was scheduled to earn $165,000 next season and was due a $30,000 bonus the day he was released. It’s believed he might be seeking arbitration to recoup that bonus.
