Toronto Argonauts quarterback Damon Allen is expected to announce his retirement as early as tomorrow, according to CFL sources.

Allen, who turns 45 on July 29, will retire as pro football’s all-time passing leader with 72,381 yards. He spent most of the 2007 season as a backup and suffered a season-ending injury during a game at Montreal last August. Allen has maintained during the offseason that he would play a 24th CFL season, even though the Argos improved their quarterback position during the winter by acquiring last season’s CFL most outstanding player, Kerry Joseph from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Joseph and Michael Bishop are expected to compete for the No. 1 QB position in Toronto.

Though Allen’s place among all-time CFL quarterbacks is debatable, his longevity is unparalleled. He spent time with the B.C. Lions, Edmonton Eskimos, Ottawa Rough Riders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Memphis Mad Dogs and Toronto, where he won a Grey Cup in 204 at the age of 41. The following year, he won his only CFL most outstanding player award when he threw for a career-high 5,082 yards.
