Als loss, Ti-Cats gain

The CFL has fined and stripped the Montreal Alouettes of a first-round pick in this year’s Canadian college draft for violating the league’s salary cap last year.
The league announced yesterday the Als exceeded last year’s $4.05-million cap by $108,285 and have been fined $116,570. Because Montreal was more than $100,000 over the cap, it will also lose the fourth-overall pick in tomorrow’s draft.
“The cap is real, it’s being enforced and it’s working,” commissioner Mark Cohon said. “It’s working to ensure our league has a level playing field and a sustainable business model.”
Montreal was to pick at No. 4 but will be forced to give that up and be relegated to just one first-round selection, that coming at No. 7.
Hamilton has the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, followed by Edmonton and Calgary. Teams selecting fifth through eighth will move up a spot and Hamilton will make the final selection at No. 8 based upon having waiver priority for posting the CFL’s worst record last year. Then the Ticats will kick off the second round with the ninth overall selection.
