The Alouettes announced the signing of three new players yesterday: receiver Peter Warrick, defensive-back Paul Woldu and offensive-tackle Julius Orieukwu.
Warrick, a 5-foot-11, 195-pounder, was selected fourth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals at the 2000 National Football League draft. A member of the 1999 Florida State Seminoles, who won the U.S. college championship, Warrick, 30, played four seasons with the Bengals before joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2005. He has essentially been out of football since being released by the Seahawks just before the 2006 season began. He signed with the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League in January 2007, but refused to report to the team.
His best NFL season came in 2003, when he posted career highs of 79 catches, 819 yards and seven touchdowns with the Bengals. Despite drawing mild interest from several franchises last season, Warrick did not even work out with any NFL teams.
A two-time All-American, Warrick was considered a preseason favourite for the 1999 Heisman Trophy. But he fell out of favour with the U.S. national media when he was suspended following an arrest on grand-theft charges.
Woldu, a 6-foot, 173-pounder, was selected by the Alouettes in the fifth round (36th overall) at this year’s CFL Canadian draft. The 23-year-old was named a first-team Canada West all-star last season after making 18 tackles, one interception and five knockdowns with the University of Saskatchewan.
Orieukwu, a 6-foot-7, 317-pounder, played five seasons with the Arizona State Sun Devils and started seven of the last 12 games last season.
