Argos draft McMaster slotback Bradwell

Mike Bradwell obviously had his head in the right place when he traded helmets in his final year at Leaside high school.
He realized he wasn’t going to go anywhere as a hockey player so he switched to football, a move that paid off yesterday when the Argonauts made him their first pick, 13th overall, in the CFL Canadian college draft.
“I played hockey at a pretty high competitive level all my life,” he said. “I always wanted to play pro sports, but when you get to 17-18 (years of age) it’s sort of a make-or-break point. You know where you’re going to go.
“So I sort of dumbed down hockey and decided to put the (football) shoulder pads on. I had a pretty good season my first year. Then I decided to go to Mac (Hamilton’s McMaster University) and it all sort of happened from there.”
The Argos didn’t have a first-round pick after trading it to the Saskatchewan Roughriders as part of the deal that brought them all-star quarterback Kerry Joseph.
