Argos likely to name Watters president

A successful run as the head of the 2007 Grey Cup committee is about to get Brad Watters back into the CFL in a big way.
A source told Sun Media last night that the Toronto Argonauts intend to name Watters to a senior position with the club this week, likely team president.
Watters worked closely with outgoing Argo boss Keith Pelley, whose tenure with the club finished Friday.
The 95th Grey Cup and the surrounding festivities were widely hailed as a success, leading to speculation that Watters would succeed Pelley.
The Cup also turned a tidy profit for Argos owners David Cynamon and Howard Sokolowski, who reportedly made in the neighbourhood of $5 million from the event.
Reached via e-mail by Sun Media last night, Cynamon said the Argos will announce their restructuring plan tomorrow but did not deny Watters’ involvement.
In Watters, the Argos would get an executive with experience in the CFL (he headed the now defunct Ottawa Renegades) and in the competitive Southern Ontario sports market through his involvement with the Toronto Rock lacrosse team.
The expected appointment will be one of the biggest in what could be a busy week of restructuring for the Argos brass.
Coach Michael Clemons has coyly kept people guessing as to his future, though it is widely speculated he will step down.
The big question, it would seem, is whether Clemons accepts a management position with the team. Cynamon and Sokolowski have made it clear they want Clemons to remain in an executive capacity.
If Clemons steps down from his coaching gig, ownership has indicated that longtime defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler would be the leading candidate to replace him.
