Argos preparing for a 2 QB set

Having one unhappy quarterback on a football team is pretty much a given considering nobody wants to be the backup.

Having two is rather unusual, but it’s something Argonauts head coach Rich Stubler is going to have to deal with, at least for tonight’s season opener here but likely well beyond that.

Kerry Joseph, the CFL’s most outstanding player last year, will get the start against the Blue Bombers tonight at Canad Inns Stadium (8 p.m., TSN). However, he isn’t exactly thrilled with Stubler’s plans that have him sharing time with holdover Michael Bishop in a two-quarterback system.

“It is what it is,” Joseph said yesterday. “I’m not in favour of it. As a quarterback, you like to get in a groove, get in a rhythm, and I don’t think any quarterback would be in favour of it.

“That’s my honest opinion about it, but at the same time you have a job to do and you get paid to do the job.”

Bishop was less loquacious, but pretty much said the same thing.

“That’s what they want to do so we’ll try it out for the first week and see how it plays out,” he said. “It is what it is, so whatever call he makes or whatever (playing) time he gives us we’ll see if we like it or not.”

Stubler doesn’t seem concerned about the possibility of having disgruntled quarterbacks on his hands.

“I consider myself lucky because I have two starters,” he said.

How this will work out is anybody’s guess, but there’s little denying that regardless which quarterback takes the majority of handoffs, the Argos have vastly improved on last season’s anaemic offence.
