Armstead speeds into camp

Everything anyone needs to know about Jason Armstead is tattooed on his calf muscles. He has the word “speed” on the left and “kills” on the right.

“In so many words, that kind of sums it up,” he said.

The Alouettes offence didn’t have much speed in 2007. But with the signing of Armstead, a veteran receiver and returner, things look much more promising.

Armstead, 28, made it to practice yesterday after undergoing his physical, but didn’t work out. That should happen for the first time today, after the five-year Canadian Football League veteran signed with Montreal Wednesday for a year and an option.

Armstead - who commanded a salary in the $150,000 range with Ottawa in 2005 and was seeking more than $100,000 from the Als - settled for less and is expected to receive $80,000, including bonuses, this season.

He said it didn’t come down to money. And, to prove his point, Armstead only dealt with Montreal and Winnipeg after his release by Hamilton last month. He wasn’t shopping his services. Instead, his desire was to go where he was wanted and appreciated. That will happen with the Alouettes, where he’ll be reunited with assistant general manager Marcel Desjardins. It was
