Austin gone

Fifty-two days after leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to their first Grey Cup title since 1989, Kent Austin has resigned as head coach of the CFL team.

Austin, 44, announced Wednesday he has stepped down after one season at the Roughriders’ helm to accept a job as offensive co-ordinator of the University of Mississippi Rebels — the team for which he played quarterback from 1981 to 1985.

Ole Miss had been searching for an offensive co-ordinator since David Lee accepted a job with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Lee was Austin’s quarterbacks coach for his first two seasons at Ole Miss, and he encouraged new Rebels head coach Houston Nutt to interview Austin.

After graduating from Ole Miss and getting cut by the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals, Austin joined the Roughriders in 1987. He spent seven seasons with Saskatchewan and helped the Roughriders win the Grey Cup in 1989 with an MVP performance in a 43-40 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
