Battle brewing at safety in Winnipeg
Courtesy Winnipeg Free Press:
They are the brains and the brawn at the safety position, although the two of them will insist they are the perfect combination of both.
Let us reintroduce you to two Winnipeg Blue Bombers who have been solid during training camp and have their fingers crossed they can lock up a starting job in the secondary with a solid performance in tonight’s exhibition game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the brawn — second-year Bomber Jason Nugent…
“That’s one of my biggest attributes: I like to hit people,” said Nugent. “When I hit people I like to break them down. I’m going to take a shot at full speed and if I miss then I’m going to make you slow down so that somebody else can hit you. But if you break down I’m going to clean you out. Straight up, brother.
“I watch the ball when it’s in the air and if I can get an interception I’m going to go for it. But if I can’t, I’m going to run through the receiver and break everything in his chest and his face… I’ll just try to demolish him. That’s a lot of fun for me.”
And here is the brains — third-year Bomber Ian Logan…
“I know the system well,” said Logan. “I can get to the ball because of my speed and quickness, I can cover a lot of ground on the field. But a lot of people don’t realize I can hit, too. It’s one of the things I did in college. I guess they see me at 5-9, 190… but when you’re running fast enough and when you go to make a hit there can be a lot of impact. I’m not afraid to hit people and I’m hoping in the exhibition game I get the chance to show that and prove some of the critics wrong.
