Better late than never

Better late than never, but Brandon Browner knows he has some catching up to do.
The 23-year-old defensive back finally hit the field Thursday at Calgary Stampeders training camp after missing the first four days — “personal issues” back in Los Angeles was his explanation.
But if first impressions are important, Browner already is a fan of the system new defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones is installing.
“I’m still learning the defence,” said Browner, following Thursday morning’s practice at McMahon Stadium. “There’s a lot of man coverage, and that’s good for me. I like to play man-to-man. And that shows a lot about our defensive backfield, that they want us to play man. That’s a good thing for us, I’d say.”
The six-foot-four, 220-pound Californian made an impact in his first season with the Stampeders. He tied for the league lead with four forced fumbles, and was fourth on the team in tackles with 55 and second in special-teams tackles with 16. More importantly, his blend of size and speed — uncommon for a defensive back — created massive matchup problems for opposing offences.
But Jones wants to see more of Browner in camp before he draws any conclusions on the second-year CFLer.
“He was good at times last year, he did some good things,” acknowledged Jones. “But he’s got to learn how we’re going to play man to man, and there are a lot of little things in our zone that he has to pick up on because he’s two or three days behind.”
