Bomber’s ready to swing axe

IT had disaster — no, complete doom — written all over it. And any momentum the Winnipeg Blue Bombers may have gained from a run to the Grey Cup looked like it was about to go up in a giant mushroom cloud.

A month ago the Bombers headed into Canadian Football League free agency preparing for an absolute worst-case scenario that would have seen their roster gutted of key components like Dan Goodspeed, Tom Canada, Matt Sheridan and a pile of critical foot soldiers and role players.

But before Bomber fans should get all giddy about the signings of all of the above — plus the return of No. 2 QB Ryan Dinwiddie, which was made official Monday — they should instead brace for a possible aftershock because all those raises and new deals don’t come without a price.

Now, while no one from the team will confirm as much, the fallout from the Bombers’ free agent success story is a roster that will take some hits before training camp. And those hits could include the likes of cornerback Juran Bolden, kick returner Keith Stokes, fullback Gilles Lezi and offensive lineman Andrew Greene. Others, like Anthony Malbrough and Jamie Stoddard — who is expected to sign soon — are returning, but with smaller paycheques.
