Brothers look to match up on field

THE Clayton clan might never be the same again. Big brother Riley — and we mean big, at 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds — and little brother Justin (6-3, 220) have never gone head-to-head, shoulder-to-shoulder, helmet-to-helmet on a football field, but there’s a first time for everything.

That time is now — at the 2008 edition of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ training camp. But while they’ve been in some close quarters, there’s been no mano-a-mano confrontations yet, the big brothers said Tuesday.

“I’ve seen him out there but it hasn’t lined up so we’ve been able to get a hold of each other yet,” said Riley, 24, an offensive lineman from the University of Manitoba who the Bombers obtained last season after he was released by the Calgary Stampeders.

“He’s lucked out so far. There’s just so many of us out here right now, so many groups of everybody… you take a quick glance because people play differently, right? Certain players like to do certain things, so you take a quick look at who’s in front of you.

“But I’m generally focused on his chest, not his face, so I might not even notice it’s him sometimes when I’m blocking.”
