Buono expects Wake to play

The clock is about to strike midnight for Josh Boden, but there appears to be a difference of opinion as to the remaining time Cam Wake is required to spend with the Lions.
At a hastily-called news conference Tuesday, GM/coach Wally Buono said he expects the CFL’s top rookie and defensive player last year will honour his commitment, even though he hasn’t spoken to the 26-year-old defensive end.
Buono was responding to a report that Wake is seeking to get out of his contract this season to pursue NFL interest.
Wake signed a minimum two-year deal out of a free-agent camp before last season and isn’t eligible to sign in the NFL until Jan. 2.
CKNW reported the agents for Wake are citing a technicality that would enable their client to break the deal. However, Buono said that as the contract was registered and accepted last year by the CFL it will be honoured by NFL clubs despite the absence of a formal agreement between the leagues.
Now, if Wake wanted to talk about an extension on his deal, the Lions would be all ears.
“Of course, we’re open to it,” Buono said. “Any time you could extend a player of that calibre you definitely have to look at it. Maybe the good that comes out of this is that we could have that discussion.”
That does not appear to be the initial intent of Wake’s agents, John Elintski and Brian Redden of Cincinnati.
