Burris calls newspaper to respond to critics

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Henry Burris isn’t prepared to sit idly by and listen to his organization have its reputation dragged through the mud.

Tired of hearing the current regime compared to past owner Michael Feterik and sidekick Fred Fateri, Burris called the Calgary Herald on Friday asking for a platform to rebut.

“If you go around the league and ask players, off the record, to tell you which team they’d most like to play for,” said Burris, “I guarantee you that 70 to 80 per cent will say Calgary. This is a great organization and they know how to treat players.

“People can say what they want but comparing this team to Fateri or Feterik is wrong. Throughout everything that’s happened this season, our organization is going in the right direction.”

The Stamps lost last Sunday’s West Division semifinal to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and head coach Tom Higgins was fired on Thursday.

NEW STAMPS COACH GETS STAMP OF APPROVAL

The Calgary Stampeders won’t officially name their next head coach until after Grey Cup, but Wally Buono already offered a raving thumbs-up to their selection.

“Of all the guys I’ve worked with, I probably hold John Hufnagel in the highest esteem,” the B.C. Lions head coach/general manager said Friday in Vancouver.

The Stamps officially will introduce Hufnagel as their head coach/GM shortly after the Canadian Football League’s title match is played on Nov. 25.
