The Montreal Alouettes have locked up Ben Cahoon for another season.

The team announced Monday that the veteran slotback has signed a one-year contract, with an option, to return for a 12th Canadian Football League season.

“With the season we’ve had in 2008, it would have been hard to leave the sport,” Cahoon said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to the upcoming season and I believe the best has yet to come for this team.”

The Alouettes finished atop the East Division this past season with an 11-7 record. After defeating the Edmonton Eskimos in the division final, Montreal fell 22-14 to the Calgary Stampeders in the Grey Cup final played in Montreal.

Cahoon, five-foot-nine and 184 pounds, was the CFL’s top Canadian in 2002 and 2003, and holds the league mark for most career receptions by a non-import (861).

He finished the 2008 season with 1,227 receiving yards, marking the eighth straight year he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark.
