Calgary: Labour Day Classic almost sold out

Courtesy Calgary Herald:

Barely 200 tickets remain for what will be the best attended Labour Day Classic in history.

Most of the 5,000 temporary seats added to McMahon Stadium two weeks ago have been sold, according to the Calgary Stampeders, with the rest likely to be gone by the end of today, predicted Lee Genier, the team’s vice-president of business development.

“There are very few tickets left to be part of Calgary Stampeder history,” said Genier. “We expect it will be sold out sometime (today).”

The new stands erected at the north end of the field over top of the Red and White Club were added for the Grey Cup game Calgary is hosting on Nov. 29.

Another 5,000 will be built this fall for the game bringing the total capacity to about 46,000 for the championship.

The 41,000 fans who will take in the Labour Day Classic against the Edmonton Eskimos on Monday will make up the largest attendance to ever take in the perennially sold out September matchup. Stands added for the 2000 Grey Cup at McMahon weren’t added until later in the season.

“It’ll be one of the biggest sporting events in Canadian history,” said Genier, noting that interest is so great they could’ve sold out another 5,000 seats had they been ready.

“With it being so tight in the West, I think everyone is expecting this to be when the real season starts.”

Just four points separate first-place Edmonton (5-3) from last-place B.C. Lions

(3-5) in the West. Calgary and the Saskatchewan Roughriders are tied with 4-4 records.

Any remaining tickets will be available at Ticketmaster.
