Cap doing its work on riders

The offseason is turning out to be just as eventful as the 2007 CFL season for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Roughriders closed out the 2007 campaign with a 23-19 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Grey Cup game at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Since then, the Grey Cup champions have parted ways with coach-of-the-year Kent Austin among other luminaries.
On Wednesday, that list of key members from the 2007 season was expanded to include quarterback Kerry Joseph, who was named the league’s most outstanding player in 2007. Joseph was traded to the Toronto Argonauts for import defensive end Ronald Flemons, import offensive tackle Glenn January, the Argos’ first-round selection in the 2008 Canadian college draft and a third-round selection in 2010.
“You have to have courage to make changes in the cap era,” Roughriders general manager Eric Tillman said Wednesday during a media conference at Mosaic Stadium. “It’s a lot more important to be popular in October and November than in the offseason.”
Joseph became one of the Roughriders’ most popular players in his three seasons with the CFL team. Joseph’s best season was 2007 where he guided the Roughriders to the Grey Cup just three days after being named the league’s most outstanding player. Joseph threw for 4,002 yards and 24 touchdowns, with eight interceptions. He also rushed for 737 yards and 13 touchdowns.
