Cats’ see extra pick on horizon

Speculation that the Montreal Alouettes will forfeit a first-round draft pick because of a salary cap violation has Bob O’Billovich smiling these days.
While there has been no formal word from the Canadian Football League headquarters — some of the eight teams are still reviewing the league audit results — word has leaked that the Als will likely lose their first pick because the club exceeded the 2007 salary cap of $4.05 million by more than $100,000.
If that’s the case, it’s good news for the Cats because the club would get the Als’ pick thanks to Hamilton’s last-place finish in 2007.
While Hamilton currently holds the first and ninth picks, a Montreal draft forfeit would land the Tabbies pick No. 8 as well. The Cats also own picks 17 and 33.
League spokesperson Jamie Dykstra said the identities of salary cap violators will be made public before the April 30 Canadian College Draft takes place.
