HAMILTON - Hamilton Tiger-Cat back-up quarterback Richie Williams entered the game midway through and told his offence to have some fun.
They took him up on the offer with a come-from-behind 24-20 win over the Calgary Stampeders in CFL action Friday night.Williams took over from an injured Casey Printers (left hamstring), down 17-6 with 32 seconds left in the first half, and led the team to 18 points to give the Ticats only its second win of the season.“I just went in and told the guys let’s be relaxed and go out and have some fun,” he said. “If we’re having fun playing football, things tend to go right.”

Williams hit Jesse Lumsden with a screen pass midway through the fourth and the running back ran over the Calgary defence for a 19-yard touchdown that gave Hamilton the lead. The QB said Calgary was blitzing and the offensive line opened up a lane downfield. Lumsden, back after missing three games with a clavicle injury, pushed his way past tackler after tackler for the score.

“It (the shoulder) felt awful but I felt great,” said Lumsden, who ran for 40 yards on 12 carries. I couldn’t be happier. We showed perseverance and a lot of pride. We came through.”

Williams hit Jason Armstead for a two-point conversion as the crowd of 23,115 at Ivor Wynne Stadium exploded in a round of Oskee-Wee-Wee. The score capped a 99-yard drive that began when Calgary running back Joffery Reynolds fumbled at the Hamilton 11-yard line.

On Calgary’s next possession, Reynolds fumbled again on the Stampeder 25-yard line and Setta hit a 30-yard field goal for the 24-18 score.

Calgary quarterback Henry Burris led a final drive, but left the game with a suspected shoulder injury at third-and-goal when he was tripped up at the Hamilton four-yard line. Hamilton defensive back Dwight Anderson intercepted back-up Akili Smith in the endzone to seal the win. Setta conceded a safety as the game ended.

“It sucks having to leave on third down on the final play with the game on the line,” said Burris, who planned on having an MRI on his shoulder.

Williams completed 12 of 16 pass attempts for 134 yards and one touchdown. Burris completed 23 of 34 pass attempts for 304 yards, one interception and two touchdowns.

The loss breaks Calgary’s four-game unbeaten streak as they fall to 6-5-1 in the West Division. Hamilton improves to 2-10.

Burris and receiver Ken-Yon Rambo connected twice for touchdowns in the first half and Calgary kicker Sandro DeAngelis was one for two in field goals, hitting from 45 but missing from 40 yards out.

Hamilton’s Setta went five for five, hitting field goals from 14, 33, 37, 51 and 30 yards and adding a punt single.

Printers was playing in his second game with Hamilton after returning from the NFL but continued to struggle despite the return of Lumsden (clavicle) and receiver Armstead (ribs) who had been out with injuries. Printers left the game having completed nine of 16 pass attempts in the first half for 73 yards.

“I’m happy for these guys,” he told reporters. “Boy, I was out there cheering and I’m kind of hoarse right now. But this is a great team win.”

Calgary took a 17-9 lead into halftime. Burris hit Rambo with a 14-yard touchdown pass on the team’s first possession of the game and followed up near the end of the second quarter with a 27-yard strike to Rambo. DeAngelis hit a 45-yard field goal in between.

Williams took over from Printers on the final drive of the half, moving Hamilton 35 yards in 32 seconds and setting up the 37-yard field goal as time expired.

Notes: Calgary offensive line coach Kris Sweet left the stadium by ambulance after the game with “heart issues.”
