Chapdelaine, Shivers could re-join Buono

Some big changes could be in the works with the B.C. Lions, as general manager Wally Buono has talked to former Edmonton Eskimos offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine and former Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Roy Shivers about joining the team.

Buono confirmed to TSN on Tuesday that there have been discussions with Chapdelaine about returning to the Lions, where he worked as offensive co-ordinator two seasons ago. According to the GM, there were a number of players on the Lions’ offense that were unhappy with co-offensive co-ordinator Steff Kruk’s play calling and wanted to bring Chapdelaine back.

Kruk, Dan Dorazzio, Mike Roach and Mike Benevides will all return with the coaching staff next season.

“Steff did a good job with the quarterbacks, especially when you consider what we went thought there (with the injuries),” he told TSN.

Speculation is that Buono could give Chapdelaine the offensive coordinator’s job again or ease him back in as the receivers coach. The team will not renew the contract of receivers coach Jamie Barresi, whose deal expires on Jan. 31.

Chapdelaine has one year left on his contract with the Eskimos, who fired him as offensive coordinator last month.

Buono has also had serious discussions with Shivers about replacing Bob O’Billovich as the Lions’ Director of Player Personnel. O’Billovich was named general manager of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week.

“Roy and I have had a lot of wins together (in Calgary),” Buono explained to TSN. “I’d be a fool not to talk to him.”
