Chip Cox re-signs with Als

In the end, Chip Cox was unwilling to take a third shot at glory in the National Football League. He wasn’t even willing to test free agency in the Canadian Football League.
Cox, the veteran defensive back, has agreed to a new contract with the Alouettes for two years and an option that’s expected to pay him in excess of $100,000 annually, The Gazette has learned. The Als, presumably, will make the announcement in the coming days, although general manager Jim Popp refused to talk to The Gazette.
“It felt like the right spot. They wanted me and I want to be there, so I figured we should get it done,” Cox said from his winter home in Columbus, Ohio. “I probably won’t get the chance to play there (in the NFL), but I’m not stressed over it.”
Cox, 24, would have become eligible on Feb. 16 to sign with any CFL team. And as a CFL free agent, he would have had the entire winter to work out and entertain offers from NFL clubs. Several teams, including Minnesota, Denver and Kansas City, made inquiries.
