Clemons To Step Down After Cup

They already need to hire a new president. Now it looks as if the Toronto Argonauts will have to find a new head coach.
A CFL source requesting anonym-ity said yesterday Mike (Pinball) Clemons is expected to step down as Argos head coach after the Grey Cup.
“I think that’s very accurate,” the source said.
Clemons said earlier this week that he hadn’t decided his future following Toronto’s 19-9 loss to Winnipeg in the East Division final and expected to meet with Argos ownership before next week. However, CFL teams aren’t allowed to make announcements during Grey Cup week.
The source added Clemons is expected to remain with the Argos but it’s not clear in what capacity. Toronto president Keith Pelley is leaving the organization following the Grey Cup to become the president of the CTV-Rogers consortium that will broadcast the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Clemons’s future was the biggest off-season question facing the Argonauts. Clemons doesn’t have a contract for next season and has deferred any such talk until season’s end. The 42-year-old Florida native has spent 19 years with the Argos as a player, club president and head coach.
His bubbly personality and tireless work in the community have made him one of Toronto’s most recognized and beloved athletic figures.
But the persistent feeling around the club this season was that this would be Clemons’s final year with the Argos. Respected defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler is a potential Clemons successor.
A father of three young daughters, family has always been a priority for Clemons, who has continually maintained he’s never seen himself as a career coach and that he has many interests outside of football, most notably the Michael Pinball Clemons Foundation.
A four-time finalist for the CFL’s coach-of-the-year award, this season was among Clemons’ best on the sidelines.
Through eight games, an injury-ravaged Toronto squad was struggling with a dismal 2-6 record. But as the injured starters returned, the Argos went on a 9- 1 run to finish the season to capture top spot in the East Division from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They appeared poised to become just the third team since ‘94 to reach the Grey Cup as the host city before their loss to Winnipeg last weekend.
