Crandell ready to be a starter again

Veteran quarterbacks can miss CFL rookie camps, but it’s best to attend when you’re stepping into the starter’s spot.
That’s one of the reasons why Marcus Crandell, a 10-year CFL veteran, was among the 37 players participating in the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ first workout of rookie camp Wednesday at Mosaic Stadium.
“It’s voluntary for me,” Crandell said. “They asked us.
“We don’t have to be here, but it’s part of the team-building process, making some sacrifices. Ten years in the league, you have to put (personal interests) on the side.”
There were four other quarterbacks participating in the workouts: third-year veteran Darian Durant; Steven Jyles, who spent two years with the Edmonton Eskimos before being acquired in an offseason trade involving defensive end Fred Perry; Drew Tate, who spent last season on Saskatchewan’s practice roster; and University of Regina Rams pivot Teale Orban, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2008 CFL college draft. They threw passes to a group of nine receivers and four running backs, none of whom have played in the CFL before.
“It gives these guys a chance to get some reps, too,” said Crandell.
