DB picked good time to have big day

Good first impressions can go a long way. At least, that’s what Jovon Johnson is hoping.
The Blue Bombers’ import defensive back was a standout in the first few days of camp, but watched from the sidelines at Wednesday’s practice.
“It’s a light ankle sprain,” he said. “I came down on a receiver’s foot and rode it a bit.”
Johnson should only miss a couple of workouts. When he returns, he’ll be trying to match the four interception performance he had on Monday.
But Johnson knows that the sudden ups and downs are to be expected at camp.
“It’s just a part of the game, so it really doesn’t bother me too much,” he said.
Monday wasn’t the first time the Bombers had taken notice of the 24-year-old’s abilities. Johnson saw some action with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006 and was on Winnipeg’s negotiation list last year. After being released from the Steelers’ camp in September, the Bombers shipped him to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for another prospect,
Johnson suited up for the Riders in two games late last season, but didn’t see eye-to-eye with then-Saskatchewan head coach Kent Austin and spent their championship playoff run on the practice roster.
