Durant understand his current role

Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Marcus Crandell isn’t going to take any unnecessary risks. If he’s not completely healthy, he won’t play.

“I don’t know,” Crandell said when asked if he would be OK to play in Sunday’s CFL game against the visiting Toronto Argonauts.

“It’s not sore, but we’ll see how it is. I’m not going to rush it. I’ve been through that before and it would be a mistake to come back too soon.”

The Roughriders practise today for the first time since beating the Montreal Alouettes 41-33 on Saturday.

While recovering from a pulled right hamstring, Crandell has been dressed as Saskatchewan’s third-string quarterback for the past two games. He could apparently play in an emergency situation, albeit with a limited offensive package that would preclude him from running around. He was asked about his situation after Saturday’s game.

Crandell has seen his replacement, Darian Durant, play the last 2 1/2 games of the Roughriders’ four-game unbeaten streak. Although Durant has thrown for 800 yards and five touchdowns during that stretch, Crandell isn’t going to hurry back into action with the risk of reinjuring his hamstring and forcing himself out of the lineup for a longer stretch.

“(Durant’s) doing a great job,” Crandell said. “He helps this team win. I’ve seen it over and over again with this team, people stepping in and doing their jobs. That’s what we expect to happen.”

Although there’s great discussion outside the team’s locker room about keeping Durant as the starter, Roughriders head coach Ken Miller won’t do it.
