Eskimo rookies report for medicals

Courtesy Edmonton Journal:

There was a buzz in the air as Edmonton Eskimos rookies reported for medicals Wednesday at Commonwealth Stadium gym.

Even a few veterans poked their noses in the door, checking out some of the 37 young recruits looking for spots on the Green and Gold roster.

“Day 1 of many, I hope,” said Eskimos second-round pick Gordon Hinse, who will attempt to crack the lineup at offensive lineman.

Veteran linebacker, Maurice Lloyd, one of the Eskimos’ biggest free-agency signings of the summer, had his eyes on the rookies, for entirely different reasons.

“I’m looking to see who will be carrying my shoulder pads later on,” laughed Lloyd, of initiating the youngsters.

Kibitzing with quarterback recruit Jared Zabransky, Lloyd was checking on the many tests the first-year players were going through.

“You’re not running no 40 (yard dash), are ya?” queried Lloyd. “I ain’t run no 40 since ’07.”

Which brought a laugh out of Zabransky.

“Maybe only if you’re chasing me,” said the quarterback hopeful, of the possibility of Lloyd taking in a sprint when veterans report on Saturday.

Zabransky is one of the bigger names here among rookies, a hero of the 2007 Fiest Bowl in which Boise State defeated Oklahoma in overtime on a pair of trick plays.

All 37 rookies went through their various medical stations Wednesday morning and will be put through their paces with their first on-field session at 3 p.m. at Clarke Park.
