Eskimos release 3

The Edmonton Eskimos have quietly released kick returner Tony Tompkins, wide receiver Trevor Gaylor and defensive tackle Charles Alston.

The CFL club assigned the three veterans to the practice roster for the final week of the 2007 football season. With the move, the three automatically became free agents available to sign with any CFL club.

Tompkins, 25, set a record in the 2005 Grey Cup for the longest kickoff return in the CFL’s championship game with a 96-yard touchdown return that paced the Eskimos to a 38-35 overtime win over the Montreal Alouettes.

After a dazzling rookie season, his performance level dropped to the point that he spent much of last year on the sidelines in civilian clothes, watching newcomers battle for his job.
