Esks sign speedy Eric Ware

Courtesy Edmonton Journal:

Speedy wide receiver Eric Ware, released near the end of training camp in mid-June, is back with the Edmonton Eskimos.

The import free agent was signed on Monday. The former Central Arkansas standout and college teammate of Eskimo kick-returner Tristan Jackson was injured early in training camp and never really had a chance to demonstrate his abilities.

The five-foot-nine, 175-pound Little Rock, Ark., native had an excellent senior year at Central Arkansas with a team-high 50 catches for 758 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed eight times for 116 yards.

With former Eskimo wide receiver Kelly Campbell still tied up with the NFL, Ware could be the speedster the team is lacking. Back in February, Ware broke the Central Arkansas school record in the 60-metre dash with a time of 6.95 seconds and tied the 8.22-second record in the 60-metre hurdles.

While the Eskimo receivers all appear to be healthy, the club could be hurting on their kick-return team. Jackson left last Friday’s game against Calgary with an apparent ankle injury, and the extent of his injury isn’t known. The Eskimos used receiver Jamaica Rector to help return kicks against Calgary so Ware could be insurance if Jackson can’t play on Sunday when the Eskimos are in Regina to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
