Former backup a happy camper

Marcus Crandell’s winter vacation couldn’t have gone any better.

Crandell was on a two-week holiday with his family in Phoenix, Ariz., when he received word that Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Kerry Joseph had been traded to the Toronto Argonauts. Crandell, who was Joseph’s backup for two seasons with the Roughriders, was on the golf course when the call came through.

“I got an eagle … in my mind,” Crandell said with a laugh when asked about his next shot after being informed of the deal. “I did have a pretty big smile and it made my vacation even better.”

On March 5, the Roughriders traded Joseph, the CFL’s most outstanding player in 2007, and a third-round pick in the 2010 Canadian college draft to the Argos. In return, the Roughriders received import defensive lineman Ronald Flemons, import offensive tackle Glenn January, a first round pick in the 2008 draft and a second round selection in 2010.
