Give him the Power, or find someone else

To assume Rich Stubler is a leading candidate to be a CFL head coach some day is to assume he wants to be one.

The Argos defensive co-ordinator is mentioned as a candidate just about every time a vacancy comes up and is considered a logical successor for Mike (Pinball) Clemons.

But Stubler said yesterday he would take a head job only if certain conditions were met.

“Head coaching to me is I have to have control over all parts of the situation,” Stubler said. “If you are going to tell me I’m going to coach a team, then have somebody else pick the players for me, then you’ve got the wrong guy.”

Stubler, who says he has been approached for head coaching jobs “a dozen times or so” wouldn’t rule out replacing Clemons. But, hopefully, not too soon.

“I don’t think anybody could replace Pinball. I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s a guy who is 25 years younger than I am,” Stubler said.

“I would consider it. We have great ownership and we have a great front office but you don’t want me to be your coach if I don’t have the power.”
