Helmet choice awaits hurt QB
Courtesy Vancouver Province:
Buck Pierce still isn’t allowed to wear a helmet for at least the next week or so, but when he does get clearance he now has two in his locker from which to choose.
The Lions are expanding the options for their concussed quarterback after Pierce hit the back of his head on the turf against the Toronto Argonauts and was sidelined indefinitely.
Coach Wally Buono said Pierce would have no choice but to switch helmets, which is why equipment manager Kato Kasuya had two models from Riddell, the industry leader in protective football gear, in the quarterback’s locker stall Wednesday.
If Pierce needs an endorsement, he’d get one from fellow quarterback Travis Lulay, who switched to the Revolution model helmet this week and said he’s not likely going back.
“There’s just a little more padding in the back,” said Lulay, who was also injured last week. “I just figured if there was any advantage to making the change it was worth doing.”
Pierce, who has taken five solid hits affecting his head in the past 11 months, stayed out with his teammates for the entire Lions practice Wednesday. The club will re-evaluate his status when it returns to work Aug. 29 following its upcoming bye week.
