Huff showing who’s boss
Courtesy Calgary Herald:
For two and a half days of Calgary Stampeders training camp, first-year coach and general manager John Hufnagel had been a quiet presence.
A pat on the back here. A word of praise there. Gentle admonishments interspersed with piercing whistles to signal a new drill.
Then came Tuesday afternoon, and the near on-field dustup when offensive lineman Jeff Pilon started barking at defensive lineman Miguel Robede for his tackle on running back Joffrey Reynolds.
Hufnagel immediately shouted back at Pilon, informing him that dealing with Robede is “my (bleeping) job.”
Not that anybody needed a reminder, but Hufnagel is clearly the man in charge of the Stampeders.
“Well, we needed that,” said Pilon, a day later. “He’s not a guy who’s going to call you out right away. He’s going to let you make your mistakes. Do it again, though, and then you’re in trouble.
“He’s not a yeller,” added receiver Brett Ralph. “But at the same time, when his voice gets raised, it’s business and you know something needs to change. He’s going to make the decisions, and there’s no nonsense that’s going to go on.”
It’s Hufnagel’s first training camp running the Stampeders, and heading into Day 5 today, he’s making inroads with his new charges.
