Hufnagel knew Flutie was great

John Hufnagel didn’t have to wait for Doug Flutie to step onto the football field to get a glimpse of his now-legendary competitiveness.
When Flutie signed with the Calgary Stampeders back in 1992, Hufnagel — then the team’s offensive co-ordinator — made the mistake of going toe to toe with his quarterback on the basketball court.
“We were playing one-on-one and I’m beating him 13-2,” says Hufnagel, now the Stampeders’ head coach and general manager.
“One of my friends was jogging around and I looked up and saw him. I said, ‘I’m beating Flutes 13-2.’ Well, the game went to 15 and he beat me 15-13. He just wasn’t going to let me win after that.”
Flutie went on to lead the Stampeders to Grey Cup glory later that year, before winning successive Grey Cups with Toronto and carving out a remarkable career south of the border.
