Hughes will get his chance
Courtesy Calgary Herald:
Cut by the Calgary Stampeders a week ago, Charleston Hughes went straight home to Detroit.
There, he contemplated his football future.
Busy mulling, Hughes never did get around to stowing his suitcase.
Good thing.
The Stamps saw three defensive mainstays wounded in Thursday’s season-opener against the B.C. Lions. Meaning that Hughes, who’d monitored the Canadian Football League proceedings via the Internet, had a hunch his services would be required in very short order.
The S.O.S. arrived Friday morning.
Hughes arrived here Friday night.
“When I heard about all the injuries, I figured they were going to call me back,” said Hughes, 24.
“I figured they’d need the help. But you never do know — I was just making sure I was ready. As long as I was prepared, that was all that really mattered.
“I didn’t even have time to unpack my bags. I just washed some clothes and put them back in the bag.”
Tickled by the turn of events?
Not even Sunday’s long practice in the stifling heat could knock the wide grin off of his mug.
“I’m real happy,” said Hughes, a defensive lineman/linebacker out of Northwood University.
