Imoh ready for another kick at the can

Courtesy Montreal Gazette:

If you liked the opening act of Mike Imoh, the Alouettes running back has vowed the encore will have you on your feet, shouting for more.

“I’m going to go out, just let my hair down and play,” Imoh said after the team’s practice yesterday at Concordia University.

Imoh, in his second season with Montreal, will get his second straight start tomorrow night, when the Als play the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium (10 p.m., TSN, RDS, CJAD Radio-800). As expected, regular tailback Avon Cobourne will remain at home, receiving treatment while continuing to recover from an ankle injury.

Cobourne ran some drills yesterday, under the watchful eye of athletic therapist Rodney Sassi, and appeared to be doing well. That means he’s close to returning. But head coach Marc Trestman, realizing a full third of the regular season remains, is being cautious.

“This is in the best interests of the team,” Trestman said.

Cobourne, who was the Canadian Football League’s rushing leader before missing last Sunday’s game against Toronto, is disappointed to miss another match, but understands the decision’s out of his control.

“I was running good and I feel good,” he said. “But it’s up to the head guy now. I don’t have a choice. I definitely want to play. Cheerleading’s not my thing.”

Imoh acquitted himself well against the Argonauts, considering it was his 2008 debut, but probably would have preferred being used more frequently. He gained 75 yards on 12 carries. That works out to an excellent 6.3-yard average. He also caught four passes for 38 yards.
