Johnson begins new journey

Bethel Johnson is having fun again.

It’s obvious by the ready smile and easy laughter. Then there’s the enthusiasm that bursts forth when he scorches another CFL defence as he’s done in each of the Argonauts’ pre-season games.

“I’m really enjoying myself here,” said the 29-year-old wide receiver, who has scored on a 77-yard pass play and a 76-yard punt return so far. “It’s like a family atmosphere, a lot of fun.”

For the past few years, football had not been fun at all for the man once considered among the fastest players in the NFL.

Sure, he had two Super Bowl rings and was making the kind of money most CFL players only dream about. But there were injuries that had reduced his kick-return abilities – a stress fracture in his foot that has obviously healed – and complaints about his pass routes.

But possibly most damaging were whispers that he had an attitude problem.
