Kickers embrace sharing job in Riderville

Kickers Luca Congi and Jamie Boreham have learned to embrace their job-sharing arrangement with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

If nothing else, it allows them to divvy up the verbal abuse.

“Oh yeah, guys like to razz us,” Congi said with a chuckle. “You get that all the time as a kicker. I always tell them, ‘I can’t help it that I was blessed to kick a ball.’ As long as you’re a good sport about it, take it and have a good laugh, it’s all in good fun.”

Asked if he endures similar commentary from teammates, Boreham erupted into laughter.

“Obviously,” he said. “We kick (for a living). If they didn’t do it, it wouldn’t be right.”

A kicker, by definition, is the Rodney Dangerfield of football — he gets no respect.

While other players spend training camp locked in physical combat, kickers are generally off doing their own thing, working on drills and fine-tuning mechanics specific to their position.

Congi and Boreham work regularly with guest coach Gerry McGrath, a former CFL punter. Their workout on Tuesday was both aided and impeded by a stiff breeze at Mosaic Stadium, the CFL’s worst windtunnel.

“Luca and I both really appreciate having that time to practise kicking into the wind,” noted Boreham, who was ranked second in CFL kickoff average last season (62.9 yards) and eighth in punting (42).
