Kicking battle begins in Winnipeg
Courtesy Winnipeg Free Press:
The days may change, but the scene surely hasn’t over the last couple of years or so.
And so it continued Thursday after another day of Winnipeg Blue Bomber training camp as an embattled Troy Westwood faced yet another media scrum to talk about yet another challenger for his job en route. This on a day in which the veteran kicker — unofficially 0-for-4 on Wednesday — was good on three of his four field-goal attempts.
“All I’m in control of is what I’m doing,” said Westwood. “Regardless of what’s happening… it’s a very competitive environment. It’s the business. I’m getting stronger, for sure, as every day goes by. To me, there’s a pace involved in training camp. You’ve got to come in and get stronger and stronger and then peak on June 12 (when the Bombers face Hamilton in their first pre-season game). That’s the approach I have, although I understand we’re competing for a job every single day. We gotta be full-go and at this point in time enough days have gone by that I feel comfortable to start blasting away now.
“I’m not struggling at all. I had one day or a couple sessions where I struggled. I’m not concerned with that. I know what I’m capable of doing and I’m striking the ball well.”
Over to you, coach Doug Berry…
Asked if the club’s kickers — including Brian Monroe and Darryl Wheeler — looked any better on Thursday, the Bomber head coach was succinct:
“Oh, probably not much better than they have for all of training camp… inconsistent,” stated Berry, who also guesstimated the trio was a combined 50 per cent in field-goal attempts to date.
