MONTREAL - The Montreal Alouettes have beefed up their special teams heading into the CFL playoffs by signing kick return specialist Bashir Levingston.

Alouettes GM and head coach Jim Popp announced the signing Sunday.

Levingston, 31, is a six-year CFL veteran who started his career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2002 after two seasons with the New York Giants. He was an all-star in 2003, when he was named the CFL’s top special-teams player.

Levingston was released by the Argos on Aug. 30 despite having scored 15 career special-teams touchdowns with the club (eight punt returns, three kickoff returns and four missed field goal returns). Included was a CFL-record 129-yard return of a missed field goal in Toronto’s season-opening 24-22 home loss to B.C.

Levingston appeared in 78 career games with Toronto, amassing 3,346 kickoff return yards, 2,898 punt return yards and 816 yards on missed field goals. He also registered 7,175 all-purpose yards.

Montreal plays the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg in the East semifinal Nov. 11.
