Lions: Logan can run
Courtesy Vancouver Province:
There are no illusions as to why running back Stefan Logan is no longer on the practice roster of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
It has been evident on a daily basis at B.C. Lions training camp in Abbotsford that Logan can run. He can catch passes when needed and hasn’t slipped much returning kicks on special teams.
Logan is charitably listed at
5-foot-6 and 181 pounds, however, and as such does not pass the packaging test applied to prospects by most NFL teams. Too small and out you go.
It is the kind of reasoning scoffed at for years by most CFL teams, including the Lions, who have taken undersized players and turned them into productive forces.
But Logan will become a different sort of test this year for coach Wally Buono, who eventually may have no choice but to find a way to get him offensive touches — especially if there is no improvement to their passing game.
An unassuming 27-year-old from Miami, Logan was far and away the most pleasant surprise of camp, which unofficially wrapped up Tuesday in explosive fashion (see Seen and Heard). Buono didn’t even wait a week before basically stating Logan was deserving of a roster spot.
But what will the Lions do with him? Joe Smith is unquestionably the primary ball carrier. Ian Smart is next up and Buono said the CFL’s top special-teams player last season isn’t going anywhere, either.
