Lots of spots up for grabs in steeltown

The southern Ontario economy may show signs of slowing.

But there is a major exception.

At the corporation, known as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, there are plenty of jobs up for grabs.

Those employment possibilities will be on the minds of 71 prospective Ticats tonight when the CFL club hosts Winnipeg in both teams’ first pre-season encounter. Game time at Ivor Wynne Stadium is 7 p.m. The contest will be aired live on TV Cogeco throughout the Golden Horseshoe with Todd Crocker and Neil Lumsden calling the action. The contest will also air on 900 CHML featuring the new broadcast pairing of Rick Zamperin and Ron Lancaster.

Hamilton has plenty of new faces who will suit up. But a number will sit out, either because they are locks to make the club or because of a slew of minor injuries.

Those who are not expected to see the field include Zeke Moreno, Jesse Lumsden, Chris Bauman, Ernest Jackson, Laurent Lavigne-Masse, Nautyn-McKay Loescher, Clinton Wayne, Jermaine Reid, Lawrence Gordon, Sandy Beveridge and Jykine Bradley. Top draft pick Dylan Barker is battling shin splints and will be a game-time decision.

The Ticats have been spared any major training camp injuries, but several players have minor groin and hamstring pulls along with some bumps and bruises.

The Blue Bombers are also into evaluation mode. Star players Kevin Glenn, Charles Roberts, Milt Stegall, Terrence Edwards and Derick Armstrong will be rested.
