The meeting Mark Washington had with Wally Buono was the kind dreaded by most veteran players. It was the one where the coach politely tries to suggest it’s time to pursue a new career.

The session led by the coach and general manager of the CFL team last month included the strong possibility Washington would not be asked to play in the secondary next season.

Yet Washington’s meeting could result in a happy ending for the decorated Lions defensive back.

However, it ended with the 34-year-old being asked to consider a position as defensive backs coach. Washington mulled the idea over during the holidays and is prepared to discuss it further now that Buono has returned from vacation.
