McCoy coming north

Cleve McCoy has had a change of heart and, if you must know the truth, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers couldn’t be happier with his flip-flop.

The South Carolina State quarterback was all set to head off to a New Orleans Saints mini-camp on Wednesday to try out as a free-agent receiver, even though the Bombers had offered him a contract and a training camp invite to work out at his natural position. But in the last day or so — and perhaps with a not-so-gentle nudge from the Bombers — McCoy is shelving one dream to pursue another.

Indeed, the NFL may be on hold for now, but at least in the Canadian Football League he’ll get a shot at doing what he does best — throwing passes rather than catching them.

“I just felt more comfortable going (to Winnipeg) and playing QB,” McCoy told the Orangeburg Times and Democrat. “It’s something I have been doing for 10 years. The opportunity was there. I took the offer on the table and I am going to make the best of it.

“I have been doing a little studying (on the Internet) and I am pretty much up on it (CFL).”

The move didn’t take the Bombers completely by surprise. They knew McCoy had no chance of cracking the lineup in New Orleans as a quarterback.

“We can’t necessarily prevent him from pursuing other options if he’s not under contract,” said Bomber director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson on Monday. “But it comes down to this issue: does this kid want to play quarterback or pursue other options in the NFL? Realistically, the likelihood of the Saints or anybody else putting him in at quarterback is almost zero.”
