Mistakes cost Bombers

Courtesy Winnipeg Free Press:

The curtain went up on another Winnipeg Blue Bomber season and — save for a change in a bit player or two — the latest production looks a lot like the old one.

The Bombers dropped their 2008 season opener 23-16 to the Toronto Argonauts in front of 26,155 at Canad Inns Stadium on Friday night in a teeth grinder in which one big special-teams gaffe and four turnovers were the back-breakers for the home side.

Not only does the loss sting because it comes at home and to a divisional rival believed to be the biggest challenger to top spot, but because the Bombers now head out on the road for a date next Friday in Montreal against the Alouettes, 1-0 after their victory Thursday over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“We didn’t make enough plays to win. It’s as simple as that,” said Bombers quarterback Kevin Glenn. “We had it and we let it get away from us. We didn’t make enough plays and we make too many mistakes.”

The Bombers were clinging to a 9-8 lead midway through the third quarter when rookie kicker Alexis Serna bobbled a perfect snap from Chris Cvetkovic and then fumbled, with the Argos James Robinson recovering at the Winnipeg four-yard line. Two plays later Jamal Robertson scooted in for a 15-9 advantage.
