Montreal: Log jam at RB?
Courtesy Montreal Gazette:
It was only one game, so it wouldn’t be prudent to get overly excited about a win against a terrible Hamilton team. Nor by the performance delivered by Avon Cobourne.
But there suddenly appears to be a logjam in the Alouettes’ backfield, and management will have some interesting decisions to make in the coming weeks, as players return to health.
Cobourne, the Als’ starting tailback, gained 107 yards on 12 carries, averaging nearly nine yards a pop, and scored a touchdown in Montreal’s season-opening 33-10 victory against the Tiger-Cats on Thursday night.
Cobourne also was used extensively as a receiver coming out of the backfield, catching six passes for 55 yards, including a 24-yard gain. And, although he’s only
5-foot-8 and 193 pounds, he administered some crucial blocks, keeping defenders away from quarterback Anthony Calvillo.
Cobourne’s performance marked the first time an Als rusher has gained 100 yards since Jarrett Payton’s 119-yard performance last Sept. 9, against British Columbia.
“Avon did a great job. Everyone knows he’s a very good running-back,” Als assistant general manager Marcel Desjardins said. “He’s tough and physical. I liked seeing him step up and stick his helmet in somebody’s chest.”
