Omarr Morgan and James Johnson expressed similar emotions when it was announced Wednesday that they had signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Both import defensive backs used “ecstatic” to describe their respective feelings when contacted at their offseason homes. Morgan returns to the Roughriders after a one-year stint with the Edmonton Eskimos. Johnson is to return for a third season with the Roughriders. Both deals are for one year plus an option. Financial details of the contracts were not released.
Morgan, 31, spent seven seasons with the Roughriders before signing with Edmonton as a free agent in 2007. In 138 career CFL games, Morgan recorded 432 defensive tackles and 23 interceptions. He has been named a CFL all-star three times and a West Division all-star four times. He was released by the Eskimos on Feb. 26.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Morgan said from his home in Los Angeles. “I’m so happy to be back where I started to play in the CFL and I enjoyed playing for so many years. I’m going to come in like a rookie and compete as hard as I can to win a job.”
