With a time of 4.67 in the 40, the Portland-born passer is the team’s fastest pivot.

And as a former member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of the John L. Harrington Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, Porter, 25, is likely Hamilton’s brightest quarterback.

Porter holds one other notable distinction. In 2005 after seven starts, Porter lost his starting Boston College job to future star QB Matt Ryan, who was selected third overall in the 2008 National Football League draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Hamilton GM Bob O’Billovich said Porter worked out for the Cats in Buffalo earlier this winter and was impressive.

“His arm strength is very good. He is very coachable and he is a very bright guy,” O’Billovich said of the prospect who will battle Richie Williams and Timmy Chang for a backup job next month. “He is excited about coming up. He understands the situation. He will press people to do the job. He has all the physical attributes.”
