No friends on field

Courtesy Regina Leader Post:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defenders are looking to give big hugs to some old friends this weekend … then slam them to the turf.

Kerry Joseph, Dominique Dorsey and Jamal Robertson, the Toronto Argonauts’ primary ball-carriers, are all recent Roughriders who will be visiting Mosaic Stadium for a CFL game on Sunday.

“I just tackle,” said Roughriders middle linebacker Maurice Lloyd. “I have no different approaches for friends or foes.

“Between the white lines everybody is a foe, so I go out and play this game the way it’s supposed to be played: Fast, physical and hard.”

Joseph, Toronto’s strong-armed and hard-running quarterback, played 2006-07 with the Roughriders before being traded to Toronto in the offseason. That followed a campaign in which he was named the CFL’s outstanding player and led Saskatchewan to its first Grey Cup since 1989.

“Kerry’s a girl’s name, by the way,” defensive tackle Scott Schultz, Saskatchewan’s version of comic relief, said with a laugh. “I’ll tell him that. He knows it. He can’t help it.

“With all respect for Kerry, he’s a great quarterback and we have a lot of respect for his abilities. For all the reasons he was the MVP last year, it gives us more concern on defence.”

Joseph leads the Argonauts in rushing with 171 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He was named the CFL’s offensive player-of-the-week for leading Toronto to a 35-31, come-from-behind victory against the Edmonton Eskimos. Joseph scored the game-winning touchdown on a 13-yard run, capping a game in which he ran 10 times for 118 yards and completed 22 of 38 passes for 343 yards with one touchdown.
