Wally Buono is not big on omens or rabbits feet, although he has been known at least once to determine his starting quarterback for a preseason game by flipping a coin.

“Trust what you see,” the coach of the Lions will often say. And if you trusted the optics Sunday, there would be little doubt that Buck Pierce will start the season behind centre for the CFL team.

Pierce had significantly more snaps with the starting offensive unit than Jarious Jackson as the Lions began to diagram a battle plan for their season opener Thursday in Calgary against the Stampeders. Buono has been known to change the order of work just to confuse outsiders, but never prior to the opening game of the season.
